A project's relevant engineering deliverables must be defined to ensure an efficient design and build process. These deliverables represent what will be built throughout the project. Identifying the project’s necessary deliverables at the beginning of the project will minimize risk throughout project execution.

For most small- to medium-sized industrial capital projects, these engineering disciplines will be involved:

  • Process
  • Mechanical
  • Civil
  • Structural
  • Piping
  • Instrumentation and Electrical

Oftentimes, Civil and Structural Design and Engineering are performed under one department, noted here as Civil/Structural.

Civil/Structural Design and Engineering exist to ensure that the ground on which infrastructure is built is sufficient, that the structures built are sufficient, and that everything is optimal for the project requirements. This article separates these deliverables into three categories: civil, concrete, and structural.

In this article, we will discuss what capital project Civil/Structural Engineering deliverables look like, the most common types of Civil/Structural Design deliverables, and how to set yourself up for a successful project before the Detail Engineering and Design phase.

Civil/Structural Engineering Deliverables Explained: Key Components

Civil/Structural deliverables depend on project scopes and goals. The project scope must be fully established to understand the full scope for Civil/Structural deliverables since the function acts as a “support function” for other disciplines. Civil/Structural deliverable requirements depend on the information provided by other disciplines.

For example, you would need the equipment information from the mechanical discipline to know how and where to design a foundation. Similarly, you would need the pipe routing from the piping discipline to determine what the pipe rack needs.

Project and engineering standards are also required to determine the types of deliverables needed for maintaining consistency and for meeting the facility requirements.

Common Civil Engineering Deliverables

  • Civil Location Plan
  • Demo Drawings/Details
  • Piling
  • Drainage/Underground Sewers
  • Site Preparation/Grading
  • Roads
  • Paving

Common Concrete Engineering Deliverables

  • Foundation Location Plan
  • Demo Drawings/Details
  • Miscellaneous Supports Foundations
  • Pipe Rack Foundations
  • Equipment Foundations
  • Equipment Structures Foundations
  • Buildings Foundations
  • Platforms and Walkways Foundations
  • Underground Structures
  • Walls

Common Structural Engineering Deliverables

  • Engineering Calculations
  • Studies
  • Steel Location Plan
  • Demo Drawings/Details
  • Miscellaneous Supports [Steel]
  • Pipe rack [Steel]
  • Equipment Supports [Steel]
  • Equipment Structures [Steel]
  • Buildings [Steel]
  • Platforms and Walkways [Steel]
  • Fireproofing Details

Preparing for Successful Detail Design and Engineering

Project success for any capital project relies heavily on proper planning and scope development. Poor or late planning and scope definition can lead to significant changes to the scope and increased change orders, which can result in significant cost and schedule overruns

Before entering the Detail Design and Engineering phase, project owners should ensure they have all components necessary for contractors to complete the design. Design contractors will likely require project owners to provide the following information and documentation:

  • Basis of Engineering and Design Data (BEDD)
  • Front-End Planning/Loading (FEP/FEL) 3 Package (if available)
  • Existing Drawings and Studies
  • Safety Requirements
  • Client Specifications and Standards
  • Permitting Requirements
