Modular plant solutions are an increasingly desirable alternative to the traditional stick-built construction approach that requires increased time on site and manpower. Modular solutions can be entirely fabricated and constructed off-site and delivered for installation and commissioning, even in remote and hard to reach locations.

This article will introduce the concept of modular plant solutions, discuss their challenges, and discuss why many plants are choosing to use modular solutions in their short and long-term expansion strategies.

What Is A Modular Plant?

A modular plant is a term that involves using the modular construction approach to build units, systems, and components off-site. These modular units are encased in steel-reinforced frames that encapsulate the intricate machinery, electrical components, and systems that are built and customized to meet different functional requirements.

The modular approach to building enables construction to occur in a controlled environment that can improve safety and quality, reduce on-site risks to construction personnel, and produce units that can be used as stand-alone systems or as multiple units to produce a complex plant with multiple functions. There are several advantages to this approach, including producing faster time-to-market solutions that are scalable and high quality

What Is A Modular Development Strategy?

A modular development strategy may be needed for capital projects that require expansion over time. Stakeholders and project managers will first require a comprehensive discussion of modular drivers and project challenges during a front-end planning phase. This is needed to ensure that the modular approach is appropriate for the project while identifying future opportunities for short and long term expansion.

There are several well-known advantages of using the modular approach. However, to ensure your modular development strategy yields the best results and can achieve benefits such as shorter project timelines and cost control, working with an expert contractor with proven experience in engineering, procurement, construction, and fabrication will be needed.

Modular Plant Solutions and Challenges

Modular solutions are an attractive option for many capital projects. However, they do introduce several challenges that must be addressed to ensure the best possible outcomes. Working with an experienced EPC contractor can help overcome these challenges.

Engineering Expertise

Modular solutions and systems require engineering and design expertise to reduce the likelihood of change requests and modifications during later stages of a project.

Front-End Planning

Extensive front-end planning is needed to produce TIC estimates, identify equipment selection and layouts, and the specific process engineering that will be deployed.

Short and Long Term Development Planning

Working with an experienced contractor can ensure that your short and long term modular development strategy is viable and can be easily implemented.

Upfront Investment in Materials

Equipment and component selection as well as upfront investment is required.
