INTRODUCTION

For this EPC project delivery, we overlapped detail engineering and design with construction to expedite a stringent schedule while meeting client expectations.

The Problem

Our client aimed for an overall increase in their import/export capabilities for product lines, including liquified petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline, and ethylene. To achieve this, the client needed to upgrade the structure and technology of multiple docks.

Challenges

We knew there was a need to provide something unique in terms of design to accomplish the expected capabilities for the client. Additionally, H+M worked closely with a third party to develop a firewater and dock safety equipment study to ensure that CFR codes and regulations were appropriately met. We delivered engineering, design, and construction services for a new and innovative multi-level ship and barge loading structure.

Outcomes

The outcomes of the EPC project delivery included the following:

  • Development of a full EPC package from FEL 1 through start-up for five ship/barge loading docks
  • Replacement of wood with newly poured concrete with increased pipeline size throughout
  • Installation of EVAPCO chiller units, new vapor recovery systems, and state-of-the-art emergency devices to bring the docks to first class safety
  • Installation of two 16” diameter loading arms, custom-designed to load large ocean vessels, on the upper structure
  • All power, lighting, grounding, and controls tied to the existing motor control center (MCC) and distributed control system (DCS) systems
